Ground squirrels diet
The males are dominant during the breeding season (January through March). The underside of their body is usually a lighter shade. They live underground in the winter, typically from late August or September until January or February. A ground squirrel munches a velvet mesquite pod. They also eat seeds and insects (ants, termites, and grasshoppers). But they will chase away other ground squirrels who get too close to their own burrow. Most of their foods are chosen for high water content because of the shortage of available water in their environment. They go into torpor, but do not hibernate. The babies will leave when they are about eight weeks old. They have a semicolonial social structure, and will alert others of impending danger with a high-pitched alarm call. The California ground squirrel can be found in open areas including fields, pastures and lightly wooded areas. They can stay active even on the hottest of days, although they do tend to limit their activity during the heat of the afternoon sun. The female will have five to eight babies in a nest in the ground or in a rock pile. It has a darker gray color that runs from its head down to the middle of its back.
